Case of exchange of baby boy in a Udalguri Government hospital :: ASCPCR (c) 59/2017

The case is related to an incident of exchange of babies in the 200 bedded, Hospital at Barnagaon in Udalguri. A woman from PuraniGoriabari village in Udalguri gave birth to a baby on January 2, 2017. The mother was informed by an ASHA worker that it was a baby boy.

The complainants alleged that the baby was not given to parents for two days and later a baby girl was handed over. An FIR was lodged and the parents approached the ASCPCR to intervene in the matter, as not much was done by the Police.

The ASCPCR chairperson wrote to the DC and SP, Udalguri (BTAD) to look into the matter immediately. A meeting was held in the district, chaired by the DC, Udalguri (BTAD), with Superintendent and staff of the Civil Hospital Udalguri along with other concerned officers. The Superintendent informed in the meeting that the ASHA worker mistakenly, out of excitement informed the parents that it was a baby boy, whereas the mother had delivered a baby girl.

The case has been asked to be further investigated by SP office Udalguri and report submitted to DC Udalguri and ASCPCR.
